This is a little dorky (little?!? -ed) but The Pirates of Penzance made Leap Day far dorkier long before Hevelonian got to it. A short video from Japan last month – Toshogu, Nikko. I recently bought (per Matt’s suggestion) a Zoom H2 to try to alleviate some of the problems caused by using the on camera audio when filming with a Canon TX1 (most recently exemplified by Tokyo Pinsalocks, but also in Chris Brokaw, Ponies in the Surf, etc). In the past we got around this by using the stereo mic on a Canon XL2 or by bringing a digital 8-track to a show but both of these are bulky (and thus completely non-spontaneous). I’m still just testing this out and trying to get a feel for what works and doesn’t. Both of these tests were recorded in 24-bit stereo WAV (44.1kHz) then normalized and converted to 192kbps mp3. The first test is of Montreal’s Famous Lovers from a recent show at O’Brien’s in Allston. They’re not particularly loud but this is recorded directly next to the PA, inside a fleece pocket for wind-screening with the 120 degree rear mic pointed at the band. The vocals are muddy (which was pretty much how they sounded live) but there’s no peaking out despite the volume. Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser. Test number two was in a much quieter acoustic environment. This is from a set by Dustin Hamman of Run On Sentence from Audrey Ryan’s loft series. I again had the 120 degree mic pointed at the guitar from about eight feet at maximum gain (thus, the sounds of audience coughing and the sound of me shifting the device at 10 seconds). Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser. A few complaints: the menu system is odd and difficult to navigate on the small & dim LCD, file transfers via USB are stupid slow, and whoever decided that a blinking red light means ‘ready to record’ rather than ‘actually recording’ screwed me up and cost me a set from the Concord Ballet Orchestra Players. Great. Out stomping around with dog in hunt for today’s POTD. These guys are the rejects. A short film I put together with some digicam footage from CNSMHB’s recent trip to Kenya/Sudan. They showed this last week at my dad’s church. There’s at least six solid inches out there now, but it’s relatively warm and gorgeous tonight. The kids on the street are leaving the bars drunk and friendly, and the dog was ecstatically mushing to some uncertain destination. I love Allston, particularly more so when a fresh coat of white covers it’s flaws. Since our photo contest kinda fizzled and the guest illustrator abandoned the mspaint layer pong after one round I thought I’d post a more quasified type tribute to last night’s lunar phenomenon. Here’s the last band from my Pipeline queue, from Providence, Howarewe Hawaii. Echoplanar is confirmed for The 48 Hours Film Project 2008. This year is going to be different, improved, slimmer, trimmer, more pixel-vision, less manager-of-the-week, more after effects, less eating off the floor, more 3D glasses, less whiskey, better sound effects, only one intestinal issue, more textured seatbacks, fewer prima donnas, better smell-o-vision, less following the rules, more compost, less headaches, more potato gun explosions, less body armor, more happiness. Check back for updates this April. *we ain’t winning shizzle. A revisitation as I’ve finally hacked myself some access to the core state secrets of Mothra Variety Hour. Tomorrow CNSMHB will be giving a slideshow & presentation thing covering their recent trip to Kenya and Sudan. This will be at my parent’s church in Arlington, starting after the service (so, roughly at eleven). If I finish in time they’ll show a short edit of some of the footage they brought back with them. Stop by if you’re interested, I don’t think it’ll be particularly long. On a somewhat related note, I’ve noticed that people keep coming to this Kiva post looking for information on riots that happened in Maputo, Mozambique on the fifth of February. The riots were related to fuel costs and the price of mini-bus fares. Fifty-six were arrested and four killed either during the riot or by the police response. Arnaldo Chefo of the Maputo City Police said that only non-lethal rubber bullets and tear gas were used (though, as we in Boston well know, such police responses are not always non-lethal). There have been similar incidents subsequently in Chokwe. A short segment from a peeesseye show we shot recently (well, November) at the Abrons Art Center in New York. If you like this you also might like this one too. I’m trying to decide if it was worth standing in the rain an hour and a half to see the Funny or Die comedy tour tonight at Conte Forum. (Thanks security lady for protecting Will against the array of terrorist tools I tried to smuggle in. A mini-tripod?! Back of the line!) Demetri Martin is pretty freaking funny, Zach Galifianakis, vulgar, middle-schoolish & repetitive, actively not so much. Nick Swardson is great on Reno 911 and wasn’t so bad but an hour later it’s hard to remember the specifics of any of his material. Will Ferrell is simply a walking commercial for himself, his new movie, his old movies, etc etc etc. Arguably the funniest part of the night was seeing Ferrell’s police escort roll through a red light at Chestnut Hill and Beacon after the show. I found myself without a way to watch the KU game tonight (particularly critical given it was against Texas). Typically I have to hope that a game like this is on one of the networks or suffer the arduous block long walk to The Sports Depot where the Kansas Alumni Association hangs out (with their alarmingly growing supply of babies). Or, best case scenario, head to Newton to see them play BC. Since ABC was showing Dance Wars: Bruno vs Carnie Wilson and the wind chill tonight is stupid cold I had given up on watching it (note, foreshadowing). Instead I had to get too clever by half and let the cruel mistress technology ‘solve’ all my problems. Instead of grading papers I stuttered through 45 minutes of what had to have been the choppiest stream of basketball ever. Thanks Logitech+Dell+ESPN+Skype+Ebay+lack of respect for some law I’m guessing+friends with cable! PS. The Jayhawks friggin lost at the buzzer with a miss by Mario Chalmers. PPS. JP was at the game, undoubtably cheering for the wrong team. I can never talk to her again. PPPS. My personalized Triscuit commercial (a low fat Kraft ‘Food’ ‘Product’!) turned out to be the highlight of the night. You’re welcome Nabisco!! It’s not really heavy in a deep or think kind of way, more like in that it’s dense and wet and fist-sized clumps of it are smashing down from the trees onto the street every time there’s either a little wind or someone foolish enough to walk underneath. It’s a little like walking around in the middle of a slushball artillery barrage. At this rate the trees will be snow-less again within the hour. UPDATE: We’re now having simultaneous snow, rain and thunder. Brilliant. The Hachiko entrance of Shibuya Station from a recent day & night in Tokyo. The main static set piece here is time-lapse footage shot from a massive Starbucks (that somehow only serves tall drinks) overlooking of one of the most crowded intersections I’ve ever seen. I do not have a drum or drum set of any sort nor do I know how to drum. I do however have more drum sticks than I know what to do with. Don’t ask me man I just hang out around here. |
