Oscar Night

Black Swan

Tonight is the Academy Awards, so let’s have ourselves a pool! Fortunately VC’s friend John has already done the heavy logistical lifting, so please fill out a bracket out at OscarFest.com. Since there are a sizable number of strangers on that site I’ll pull the scores out of those who occasionally stop by here and we’ll have our own little subcompetition. This year I’ve seen more than half the best picture nominees (6 of 10) so am more than qualified to embarrass you all with my startlingly accurate predictions.

On squirbles and vaugeness

Sorry to have interrupted your dinner. (237•365)

I rather enjoyed this piece in City Journal on the decline of grammar in spoken English. The whole article makes some straightforward points about errors I notice even in my own speech patterns, but this intro example of what not to do has it’s own peculiar charm.

“And he was like, you know, ‘Helloooo, what are you looking at?’ and stuff, and I’m like, you know, ‘Can I, like, pick you up?,’ and he goes, like, ‘Brrrp brrrp brrrp,’ and I’m like, you know, ‘Whoa, that is so wow!’”

This just makes me want to rub a fuzzy tummy.

Isla Del Encanto

I got in my parent’s car this evening and this Eddie Palmieri song was playing on the radio. Which was amusing, because Puerto Rico is where I’m going, tonight, in the next half-hour or so. The hotel where I’m staying is (true story) where the pina colada was first invented. So I’ll do some more in depth research on that topic while the rest of you can enjoy the refreeze.  See you suckers later!
