Please save me from all doctors with sharp toys. Is NOTES AWESOME?
I first heard of this last Wednesday when it was discussed at a BWH surgical research meeting we have. Whoever is selling this practice must have a full time PR staff because since then it’s been mentioned (as of today) at least 47 times in the popular press. I’m not really in a position to judge and haven’t seen any data but my inclination is to assume replacing minimally invasive, fairly straightforward laparoscopic procedures with something that goes either a) through the wall of the stomach, b) up the anus and through the colon or c) in transvaginally and through the uterus(!) is going to have higher complication rates.
My initial knee-jerk intuition to believe the worst about doctors probably says something negative about my psyche. If I hung out with the ex-gay, faith-based healers more often I’d probably have a brighter and cheerier disposition towards the hospital-industrial complex.
