What have they done to my baby?!?

Never have I seen a less happy-lookin’ critter. Bet she got lots o’ candy!!!

One more month

It was a mistake to not bring Maija in the car with me. I didn’t really need any of the crap I brought instead of her, several boxes of which I haven’t even unpacked yet. Possibly, I’ve been spending too much time inside working on fixing the new hevelonian, too much time dwelling on the bestest of all tags. At any rate, one more month.

Guess who’s coming to dinner this Friday? I never thought I’d say this but PLEASE SHAVE BEFORE SENDING. Good grief.

UPDATE: She didn’t come. She’s not coming til Thanksgiving. She’s not going to remember me. This sucks.

A Denver-style delegate scramble

At long last, voting is closed and the results are in. Thanks to all those who participated in Dog-a-palooza, be it directly by submitting shots (and then voting) or in a more oblique fashion by voting for this or that unrelated thing. Also thanks for those helpful suggestions on the very real issue of POTD subject equity.

I’m going to attempt to try to sidestep the sort of controversy surrounding the math in the hevelonian anniversary post by using three different scoring methods to determine the winner. First (and most democratically) I’ll use a quasitative analysis to pull the presumed top vote from each comment. Second, I’ll give each mentioned shot a vote, regardless of it being indicated a clear favorite, as the instructions mentioned legality of multiple votes. Lastly, I’ll keep to the one comment one vote concept but split the voting power up based on the number of shots mentioned. For our purposes a three-way split is worth 0.33 points.

Top vote per person:
Winner: Puppy Kisses, 3pts
1st runner up: Moon Doggy, One more, blue eye, The Winning Shot, 1pt each

Multiple votes per person:
Winner: Puppy Kisses, 5pts,
1st runner up: One more, blue eye, The Winning Shot, Doll dog, 2pts each

Fractional voting:
Winner: Puppy Kisses, 1.58pt
1st runner up: Moon Doggy , 1pt

So, by all three measures the overall winner here is Puppy Kisses, below. Congratulations Nell! Please pick up your BFP ($25 gift certificate to Best in Show) in person at the BFP prize window (located at 510 26th Ave, San Francisco)! As a bonus prize, you’ve earned your very own menu link along the hevelonian top header menu. Thanks again everyone for playing!

Judgment Day comes for Dog-a-palooza

It’s officially past 10am PST/1pm EST, so the submission deadline for Dog-a-palooza has passed and now it’s time to select the winner of our BIG FRIGGIN PRIZE. Since I know the nature of the BFP has been a subject of great debate (you materialistic stuff-mongers you) here’s the scoop – the winner will get a $25 gift certificate to Best in Show, a gourmet pet crap store I walked past this morning on the way to work. That’s $0.05 more than you’d need to get a stylish DOG TUXEDO.

I am a big believer in the wisdom of the masses (not really, but let’s go with that for now) so will let the random lurkers and spambots that visit this site decide on the winner. We’re all Diebold up in here so you can vote as many times as you like with no paper trail to come back to bite ya.

All nine entries can be found en masse, or individually below (in reverse order to counterbalance the recency bias). Vote in the comments, and don’t vote for your own (unless you’re really that desperate for the tux).

Stuff My Dog Hides Under

Last night’s POTD (number one million in an infinite series) suggested a theme: “Stuff My Dog Hides Under.” Ok so it’s not quite Stuff on My Cat but we have to work with what we’ve got to work with.

Is the semester over? Not quite, no matter how many times I close my eyes, hold my breath and immaturely wish otherwise. The looming threat of having to grade the remaining avalanche of homeworks may yet send me completely off the deep end. Today’s brief walk around Willard Woods in Lexington was helpful in postponing that imminent demise.

In other procrastination news, gratuitous flower shots.

529

Instead of taking a good POTD yesterday I took this slew of mediocre ones. Overly appropriate audio track stolen without shame from Mediafriend. An improvement (I hope) on An Easter Afternoon.

UPDATE: A few people have mentioned having trouble with blip.tv stuttering for them. If that sounds like you, 529 is also on youtube.

Spring #1

I rather liked my POTD today but think it failed to demonstrate that that dog was, in truth, inserting herself into my frame against my will. As you can see from sub-POTD below, she actually jumped up on a wall here despite the lack of a flat surface to stand on, mountain goat style. As I didn’t have the new camera her sticking her schnozzle in the frame kept screwing up the autofocus on the shot I was trying to compose of Glenville and some clouds moving at a pretty spectacular clip right at dusk. Today was a rainy, windy day, and to make it seem all the spring-ier random guy on the radio this morning promised snow over the weekend.

A beautiful night

There’s at least six solid inches out there now, but it’s relatively warm and gorgeous tonight. The kids on the street are leaving the bars drunk and friendly, and the dog was ecstatically mushing to some uncertain destination. I love Allston, particularly more so when a fresh coat of white covers it’s flaws.

And the next morning, she’s inexplicably happy.

Heavy snow in Burlington

It’s not really heavy in a deep or think kind of way, more like in that it’s dense and wet and fist-sized clumps of it are smashing down from the trees onto the street every time there’s either a little wind or someone foolish enough to walk underneath. It’s a little like walking around in the middle of a slushball artillery barrage. At this rate the trees will be snow-less again within the hour.

UPDATE: We’re now having simultaneous snow, rain and thunder. Brilliant.
