Today is National Gibraltar Day, the 304th anniversary of the English ‘displacing’ the Spaniards who had previously dwelt there.
I only mention this because celebrating this anniversary would have been an entirely legitimate reason for the presence of the painfully loud yet church-judge-sober karaoke travesty going on in the union cafeteria at lunch today. Apparently, it was for the celebration of this. Some members of the community seem to have a fundamental immunity from the guiding principle of shame, allowing them to have fun while the rest of us suffer in phantom-limb humiliation on their behalf as they pitchedly present their Fivel Goes West renditions to bemused lunch seekers. My suspicion though is that once the videos I saw being shot today work their way up on the youtubes, shame will indeed get laugh last.
