Some Lobsters

I woke up at 4am this morning to take my parents to Logan for their flight to New Orleans. After getting rid of them I found myself too delirious to think straight so figured to crash a bit longer before work. I lay down and dropped straight into this extended hardcore visceral hallucination of being sucked under a tsunami in some filthy urban harbor where I was trying to avoid the illegal and illicit behavior of my friends. The dream (which was highly disturbing with the ugly particulars I am leaving out) bore more than passing resemblance to dream scenario #2 which had been shared with me the day prior, in which I broke into an industrial refrigerator at an unnamed telecommunications giant and stole some lobsters before escaping by swimming in a pit of dirty water. Apparently, escape occurred without apprehension. Also apparently, I have unresolved issues.

All of this provides me with an overly roundabout and too revealing way of letting me feature a particular VOTD which Echoplanar showed at Coolidge open screen last year. So, without further ado, I Put a Fu Kung You.

We’ve officially switched our screening for “It’s OK to Be Afraid” to 7pm, Tuesday the 8th. Buy your tickets here! Ancillary benefit to switching- Michelle Barbera and We’re Making a Movie (of The Guts and the Glory fame) is now in our group. Collateral downside- we’re no longer grouped with our Open Screen ?????? Jeff Stern and Stand Up Mandy. Actually know that I’ve checked they switched to Group G on 4/15 anyway – that’ll be worth seeing.

I’m really looking forward to seeing whoever can make it out tomorrow. Vote early, vote often, vote without regard towards future political endeavors!!

A new uncool unkind unfun reality has crept into Allston life. Tuesday nights (aka the singularly decent non-work worknight of the week) this semester are otherwise logistically occupied and can’t be spent either on open screen or pipeline.

And worse, friggin Ramsey has up and moved to the promised land of medical marijuana and tiger attacks leaving the rest of us here in the icebox of the country.

Have I spent years putting off the drudgery of maturity just to have this carefully constructed fiction come to this sad end? A new plan is needed. Wednesday night must somehow be redeemed. The floor is open to ideas.

No one wants to be the guy who makes people listen to his piss-poor karaoke Like a Virgin while they’re trying sing Hank Williams classics and smack each other on the back with broken beer bottles. This of course is in direct conflict with the desire to get people to see and validate any of the random crap I’ve been spending my life generating lest it go otherwise unobserved.

With that caveat, I couldn’t decide what to bring to the November Open Screen so burned both HOCR and the new new Deconstructing Dinner . There was a massive crowd in the Coolidge lobby, unfortunately all there to see the premiere of No Country For Old Men. Overall I think CNHB’s first starring roll and the spicy lasagna went over better (AVDK’s opinion to the contrary) than the Clap Your Hands Say Yeah bit. The thing about a one minute film is if the audience doesn’t expect it to be so short and they’re trying to settle in it understand what you’re doing it can be over before it even gets started.

IMO the best film of the night was Kimberly Andrade’s (mostly) found footage montage, ‘The Wonder of Water.’ I can’t find this online but she used the opening from the film below, Normandy beach scene, slow motion/zero gravity water balloon bursting and a kicking Flaming Lips soundtrack.

In honor of today’s NYC marathon I put together something from one of my other most favorite fall sports event, the Head of the Charles. Dave and Sadie make it in briefly. This is an extension of the editing technique I used for Bunnyslope last year. The audio track is a instrumental interlude from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.

One of my dislocated friends mentioned that she didn’t know about the Best of Open Screen, and if she didn’t, then no one does. So here it is, officially. Thursday, September 6th, 7pm, Coolidge Corner, in the big theatre. I’m a bit unsure how this will end up since I sent in a new tape copy from a quicktime render rather than the original master which has gone missing. Anyway, it’s not my best and my crap alone definitely isn’t worth $.75 much less $7.50 but overall this should be a great show. Winterpills at the MFA

If you’ll forgive a bit of promotion – The Winterpills are playing tomorrow at the MFA, with Erin McKeown. These guys are fantastic, please check this show out. A while back we shot their live show at WMBR’s Pipeline (two of the videos can be found on Echoplanar), and it occurred to me as I saw this announcement that I promised to mail them the DVD of this some time ago yet completely forgot. Tomorrow, everything gets mailed: a box of random crap to Kristin in Vanuatu (inset), tape of Escape From Wrentham to Jeff for the Best Of Open Screen coming September 6th, and a stack of DVDs to the Winterpills. If you want, you can listen to an audio stream of their full set on Pipeline. To the postal service!
