Trailer Tuesday: End of the World Edition

You may or may not be aware that tonight is our last night on earth (thanks LHC!). By my highly scientific calculations we’ll all be swallowed into the blackhole in roughly four hours (it’s currently 7pm PDT + 3 hours to the east coast + 5 more to get to London + a few more to get into Europe + however late French scientists sleep). So that’ll be the end of that. I guess the reason I’m not too surprised as this scenario the exact plot of the David Brin novel Earth from 1991 (less the talking dolphins and earthwide consciousness computer, Gaia). So, to commemorate what we’ve all been sitting around waiting for since then, here’s the trailer for 1979′s The Black Hole. I believe this was the second movie my formative pre-kindergarten brain ever saw (being the 2nd half of a Fox & the Hound double-feature).

Also, interesting advice from Noreen Malone. If you have a choice in the matter and want to see the other side of the event horizon, be one of the last kids in the pool.

The more matter—and people—a black hole gobbled up, the bigger it would get. That could have the effect of making it less spectacularly deadly. As a black hole increases in size, the differences in gravitational force inside become less dramatic. If you fell into a truly gigantic black hole, the rate of change—and resulting tidal force—might not be enough to rip your body apart until after you’d crossed the event horizon.

ps. MITL Trailer Tuesdays aren’t quite so cataclysmic.

I remember seeing that Fox and the Hound/Black Hole double-header with you at the drive in.

I cried my eyes out about the poor fox and hound and the Black Hole terrified me.

I just watched the trailer. I remember thinking that the damsel in distress (looks like she’s about to be turned into an android) was having a baby. What can I say four year olds are creative.
